Latitude N 34 46.247 x Longitude W 82 28.022 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Since the potential ballpark in Powdersville is on the minds of a lot of people in the community, its location is the subject of this article. Most of the older generation of Powdersville refers to the tract of land east of I-85 along Cooper Road as the Childers' Property. That's because Charles Parkins "Charlie" (1863 - 1925) and Hester Loucinda "Hettie" Childers (1871 - 1920) owned the property at the turn of the 1900s. The Childers married February 27, 1890, and both Charlie and Hettie had the surname "Childers" before they were married. However, some of the Childers family members have changed the surname spelling to "Childress". Charlie Childers' parents were John B. (1817 - 1893) and Susan Tripp (b. 1825) Childers. They built a small house on a knoll and their son, Charlie, later added the two-story front to the house. Susan Tripp Childers owned over 600 acres there and bought another 260 plus acres around 1874. Susan probably inherited some of the original acreage from her family (the Tripp's) and some came from the Childers family. The home site was on a knoll out in a field near a large oak tree, and the front of the home faced north toward Paris Mountain. It had a gorgeous view of the mountain until the business signs sprang up along I-85. It also overlooked the old Childers (Childress) Family Cemetery at the edge of I-85 where about 50 of their kin are buried. The driveway came off Cooper Road to the front and back of the house. In 1915, the insurance policy identified the house as a 2-story, 8 room, metal roof dwelling, a half mile East of Piedmont Road (now called River Road) adjoining lands of R. E. Childers, J. E. Dilworth (John E. and Mary Childers Dilworth), and others with a value of $1600.00. Paul Orr, a well known resident of the Powdersville Community, was born in the old Childers' house back in 1928. His mother was Leona Ruth "Leona" Childers (1899 - 1992), daughter of Charlie and Hettie Childers, and she was also born in the old two-story house. Paul's grandfather, Charlie, had already died when Paul was born. Paul's father, Otis McCay "Otis" Orr (1890 - 1976) married Leona Childers on December 7, 1919 and lived at the Childers' home place until 1930 and then moved to the old LaBoon property in the Mount Airy section of the Powdersville Community. The Childers' home place was sold about 1929 or 1930 to divide the estate among the children of Charlie and Hettie Childers. The home site was sold to the Cooper family about 1939 or 1940. The old Childers' house was rented to tenant farmers and burned around 1950 leaving two chimneys that stood at the home site for years. There's no sign of either chimney now.
