There was 6-8 large laying-flat stones in the area, that appeared to be mounted in 2 rows. It's assumed that these stones were probably used as a foundation to support the church building. o----------o In the Carolina Room, you will find bits and pieces of information collected by me, in my travels in different Counties in South Carolina. Visit http://members.aol.com/pastense2/scroom.htm In the Carolina Room, I have stored many documents that pertain to the State of South Carolina, however, I do have some records that I have acquired from other States, as well. Here you will find a little bit of my Family History, South Carolina Misc. Records extracted, from (wills, deeds, marriage records, deaths records, probate records) Penitentiary Records, Coroner Inquisitions, Church Cemetery transcriptions where to get copies of these books, pictures, census information, surname connections, Mortality records, Slave records and Mortgage Records. Many of the items in my possession, were copied from the original document and later compiled and placed in one of my many databases, for future reference. Keep in mind, that a lot of hard work has been placed in the years of research that I have done. Most of what you will find here I freely share, with the understanding that it is copyrighted material, published either by me or someone else, that I have acknowledged. I sent abstracts from its minutes, showing who represented the different churches at the annual Association meetings. I have used them to establish several genelaogies. If you don't mind, Paul, you may post a note saying (with my email) saying that I have done--and will do at no charge--genealogy for Anderson Co. African-Americans. Wilkes [of Belton/Calhoun], "What's in a Name?" "Not much to some people and a great deal to others. Some are indifferent whether they are called SMITH, BROWN, or JONES, while others insist upon being called GEORGE WASHINGTON, or ANDREW JACKSON. The negroes are to be classed with the latter. Since they have become free, the Churches have found it necessary to call them up and record the names by which they wish to be known. One couple give in that of Mr. and Mrs. Gen. BEAUREGARD; Mr. and Mrs. Gen. LEE, Mr. and Mrs. Gen. STONEWALL JACKSON, and so on through the catalogue of distinguished names. "Two worthy ministers organized the colored members into a separate Church, in a neighborhood not far from here. Having completed the organization satisfactorily, it became necessary to give the church a name. One of the brothers proposed that it be known as "Mt. Zion." The negroes looked at each other, said nothing, and hung down their heads. Seeing that the name did not please them, the other brother arose, and proposed, inasmuch as they were free, that the Church be called Liberty. He struck the key note then; in an instant every one raised their head, displayed their ivory, and cried out, 'yes, Massa, dat's de name! We call him Liberty!'"
