Elizabeth Hare was active in the activities of the nearby Unity Baptist Church since its founding, and so were many of their descendants. There was no evidence in the church records that James Wallace, Sr. partook of those religious activities. James Wallace Hare, Sr. died August 7, 1884, and was buried on a hilltop on the old homestead. Joseph Preston Hare, who married Mary Ann Adams, died July 12, 1901. They had ten children, James Wallace Hare, Jr., who married Ella Jane Adams, a sister to Mary Ann Adams, died September 1, 1931. They had eight children. Elizabeth Jane Lyles Hair died February 20, 1903. She was buried in the Unity Church Cemetery. The homestead land passed to the remaining son, James Wallace, Jr. He sold the land to Lee Pelfrey in 1922 and moved to the village of Westminster. The land deed and plat of the sale shows the location of the old burial site with the notation, "Mr. Hair's grave excepted." That small burial site, enclosed by land owned by Ted Canute in 1995, still belongs to the descendants of James Wallace Hare, Sr. The owners of the property over the years have graciously granted access to the descendants for care and upkeep. The grave, hidden in woods and bordered by stones, was originally marked with a simple fieldstone inscribed. "J.W. Hare, died Aug 7, 1884." A few years back a wood shed was erected by a group of descendants. In 1992 the trees and underbrush within the plot area were cleared and a chain link fence was placed around the site and the shed was given a metal roof. A permanent marker was placed by the old field stone. We are encouraging the younger generation to continue the upkeep. Wish us luck. May James Wallace Hare, Sr. continue to rest in peace.
