He married Nancy Zachary, born October 26, 1811 died January 16, 1892. They lived in a log cabin that stood next to the home later built by their son "Hig." Originally buried in the family plot, their graves, along with some of their children, were moved to Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens. They had eight children: 1. Sarah Ann b. May 26, 1839 d. September 3, 1857. 2. Elizabeth L. b. July 10, 1841 d. January 27, 1864; m. Baylis Nicholson b. August 18, 1834 d. April 10, 1902. 3. Henry Marion b. January 26, 1843 (Confederate Army Civil War) d. September 1, 1921: m. Frances Rebecca Nicholson b. May 16, 1849 d. June 6, 1893. 4. John P. Dallas b. December 30, 1844 d. August 27, 1863 of typhoid fever while serving in the Civil War. 5. James Matison "Jim Mat" b. December 4, 1846 d. May 6, 1913: m. Emma Thomas b. October 6, 1850 d. August 2, 1930. 6. Thomas Jefferson b. November 27, 1848 d. September 11, 1857. 7. William Johnson b. April 25, 1852 d. September 3, 1857. 8. Alson Lafayette "Hig" b. May 2, 1854 d. December 9, 1935: m. Louisa "Lucy" Jane Thomas b. December 6, 1864 d. January 2, 1916. Note: Within a period of one week's time, three of the children, Sarah Ann, Thomas Jefferson and William Johnson, died of an intestinal disorder known as the bloody flux.)
