Her surname reported by Dorothy Holcombe Williams by phone, Oct 2005. Henry Bivens announced in Nov/Dec 1989, his intention, per SC law, of moving the graves of John L and Mary Jane Clement from their location at the Andrew Williams farm about 15 miles east of Pickens on Slickum Rd.(This road is off Hamburg Rd, east of Easley.) Announcement read "To the Living Relatives of Jeremiah and Mary Jane Clement." No removal location mentioned. Henry Bivens confirmed to Preston Greene in June 2006, by phone, that he moved these two graves to the Clement Family Cemetery on Shady Grove Rd, near Pickens, next to the three other graves already there. The Andrew Williams property was developed for home sites. Was the Andrew Williams property the same as Pinckney Gossett's and that is why Mary Jane and son were buried there? Tom Hill and Preston Greene in June 2006 were able to read, partly, Mary's gravestone. It was only because the sun was shining across the stone on an acute angle, and after several minutes, became unreadable again. It was also covered in lichen, which blocked the inscription. It reads " In Memory of Mary Ann Clement, wife of Jeremiah Clement born May ???? died 187?" Henry Bivens says it read "Mary Jane, Consort of." Cem Survey, v 1, p 25, which covers this cemetery lists three graves only: Jeremiah, Mary Dean and Salathiel, and was surveyed in 1978, before the other two graves were moved. 1850 Census, SC, Pickens Co, only Mary Gossett listed is daughter of Pinckney. Lucy married Unknown Hudson. opd: mcadams: 8/05 NOTHING AT CLEMENT GEDCOM @GENEALOGY.COM/MESSAGE BOARDS/DEAN/DUNN "Jerry" Clement operated a grist mill near his house just outside Pickens on Shady Grove Rd, where he also made shingles, coffins and other carpentry items. The mill was beside the creek, and later, (after Jerry's death?) the mill was sold to Johnny Durham; the mill is gone today, but you can tell where it was. About 1/2 mile after turning off SC 183 onto Shady Grove Rd, on a hilltop on the right is a cluster of houses, some close to the road, and back of these is a large two story white frame house, and this was Jim Clement's, Jerry's son, sold after the death of Jim. Jerry's house is not there now and was behind or to the side of Jim's, perhaps nearer the mill at the bottom of the hill near the creek. Walt Chastain owned Jim's house for a time, but it now belongs to someone else, unknown, (name of Raoul, according to Tom Hill, who visited the place in Oct 2005, and met the current owner, a Mexican.) Jerry was a large man, weighing about 300 lbs, and built his own coffin, which once when he tried it out for fit, found himself stuck, and when he got out, he made another, this time larger. He made the coffin for Cecil Grant's grandmother, Millie Gilstrap Grant, d 1935, wife of William Asbury Grant. Cecil Grant tells that his Uncle George Grant, b 1890, when he was a child, played with Warren (he believes) Clement, son of Jeremiah and Mary M Dean, and says that Warren died as a child. They were about the same age, and once on a Sunday, George, at about 8 years, went over and was invited in and asked after Warren, and was told by Jerry "he had gone off to some damned Sunday School at Secona Baptist Church, and he didn't know why." Also said there was a Sam Dunn nearby who operated a sawmill. All this above two paragraphs from Cecil Grant by phone: 10/4/05 Cecil Grant: 864 878 9456 (call at night) The cemetery can be located from these directions, and it is not much of a climb (50') to reach the gravesites, but the site has some blackberry brambles and a lot of growth. If you want more particular directions I can get them from Tom Hill who lives nearby. We should have made note of the buildings exact address, which is marked.
