Latitude N 23 53.717e x Longitude W 82 30.783 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Hunt's Memorial Baptist Church had its beginning in the heart of Mrs. Mattie Hunt. She prayed for a church to be built in this community. Mrs. Hunt lived in what is now known as the Guy Clark home. When Hunt's Memorial began in 1933, the first congregation met in homes. The land donated by the Hunt family was located next to the Hunt's family cemetery dating back to the 1800s. After the land was donated, the building of the church began. The timber was donated and cut by John Harrison, Bob Ponder, Lawrence Freeman, and a few others of the community. Frank Hester finished the lumber at his sawmill free of charge. The lumber not donated was bought from Rev. Cannon at Table Rock for a price of $317. These men built the church themselves, so there was no other charge. During the time they were building, the members met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Duffy Brewer. Mrs. Brewer was the first organist at the church. When the church was completed. Rev. Cannon preached the first sermon. Rev. Harvey Stanbury of Pickens was the first pastor. When the church began, its main income came from crops, such as cotton or corn, which the congregation worked. When the harvest was made, the money was used to improve the church's first organ. The Women's Missionary Society collected eggs the family chickens laid on Sunday. These eggs were sold and the money used for their missionary projects. In December 1935 the first church burned and the people met in homes again until a new church could be built. The new building was built on the foundation of the first church. The basement under the old part was done in 1946. The Sunday School additions were done in 1962. The remodeling of the sanctuary, additions of the vestibule and kitchen area, the bricking of the outside and other general remodeling were begun in 1974. Now as Hunt's Memorial moves into the 21st Century, we have many other improvements in the sanctuary. We also have a fellowship building which was built in 1992. We are not selling eggs for our mission projects, but we are having money raisers for mission trips. Our youth went on a mission trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, an area devastated by hurricanes in 1999. It is great to know the history of our church, but we do not want to look back; we want to look forward with our eyes and heart focused on our Lord and Savior who made everything possible. Moreover, as we go into the rest of this century, God will lead us just as He did Mrs. Mattie Hunt. By: Piedmont Baptist Association 2003 o----------o Hunt's Memorial Baptist Church 501 Alex Drive Easley, South Carolina 29640 Hunt's Memorial Baptist Church was named in honor of Mrs. Maggie Hunt. She held Sunday School classes in the woods across from the Willie Lathem place. She gave her time because it was too far to walk, and people didn't have another way to get to the churches in the community. Hunt's Memorial began in 1933, (when Franklin D. Roosevelt was President of the United States), and the first congregation met in homes. The land, which was located next to the old Hunt cemetery, was donated by the Hunt family. After the land was donated, the building of the church began. The timber for the new building was donated and cut by John Harrison, Bob Ponder, Lawrence Freeman, and a few others of the community. Frank Hester finished the lumber at his sawmill free of charge. The lumber not donated was bought from a Reverend Mr. Cannon at Table Rock for $317.00. These men built the church themselves. While the church was being built, the members met in Mr. and Mrs. Duffy Brewer's home. Mrs. Brewer was the very first organist and was also an organizer. When the church was finally built, the first sermon was preached by the Reverend Mr. Cannon. Reverend Harvey Stanbury of Pickens was the very first pastor. When the church began, it was the height of the depression era and income to support the church came from crops, like cotton and corn. Members of the congregation planted, worked and harvested these crops. The money was used to improve the church's organ. Some women collected eggs on Sunday and sold them for missionary projects. In December, 1935, the first church burned. People had to meet in homes for some eleven years until the church could be rebuilt. The new church was built on the foundation of the church that had been burned. The basement underneath the old part was finished in 1946. Sunday School additions were finished in 1962. The remodeling of the other parts of the church was begun in 1974. In 1977 the bus ministry started with an old school bus bought by the Married Couples Sunday School class. Curtis Ramey drove the bus on Wednesday nights and during Bible School. In 1981, the bus was sold, and a smaller van was purchased. Ray Durham is the present bus tender. This ministry brings a lot of children to church who could not come otherwise. The first parsonage was built in 1949-1950 when a lot was purchased from Kay Smith. Pledges and supplies were donated by church members. Wayne and Fred Rich, members of the church, with help from others, built the house. The parsonage was sold in 1979 to Mrs. Carolyn Smith Aiken for $25,000. The new parsonage was built in 1979 at a cost of $50,000. They bought the property from Jim Lathem for $8,000. This parsonage was completed in December of 1979. in fifty years, the new church has prospered. There is now a membership of 106. In Bible School, they averaged about 70 children for the last five years. This church has prospered so much because of the love, dedication and the prayers of the earlier members led by Mrs. Mattie Hunt. Mrs. Hunt would be pleased to see that her dream.
