CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY:
------------------------

Several years ago there was a popular song that made the rounds that had as its
opening lines. "When you live in the country, everybody is your neighbor."
With the Lathem family of the Mt. Carmel section of Pickens County, a more apt
line could read, "When you live in the country, everybody is your cousin." The
Lathem family was among the earliest settlers and descendants continue to live
throughout the area.

The home of J.K. and Emma Lenhardt Lathem still stands just west of Mt. Carmel
Baptist Church on Hester Store Road. The Victorian house was completed in the
late 1890's and is currently owned by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gantt.

There was a lot of land in the family estate, probably more than one thousand
acres. Major crops grown were cotton, corn, and grains. Labor was furnished by
slaves up until Civil War times and afterwards by several tenants and/or
sharecroppers. The Lathem family operated a cotton gin, and it burned just a
few years ago. A blacksmith shop and forge indicate the size of their farming
operation and show the self-sufficiency of the family. There was a wagon road
at the Lathem house and was used only for wagon travel. The carriage used the
front drive way, and the carriage house is still there. When Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Gantt bought the house, they were able to locate the chassis of the old
carriage.

At one point in time, James K. Lathem had an opportunity to buy the property
between Hester's Store and Mt. Carmel Church. The cost was around $1,000 and he
chose not to buy it, but bought a slave instead. Shortly after purchasing the
slave, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and freed
the slaves.

Family lineage charts show the following member of the Lathem family:

Lucy Jane Lathem (1854-1912) married Elias Townes Holcombe (1854-1905

James Kannon Lathem (1853-1918) married Emma Lenhardt (1858-1945)

Lawrence Orr Lathem (1859-1948) married Eliza Arial (1861-1900) and Eula Griffin
(1869-1940)

George Washington Lathem (1861-1943) married Frances Louisa Watkins (1879-1965)

Eleanor Lathem (1865-1904) married Dr. Jesse J. Morgan (1860-1903)

J.K and Emma Lathem had ten children - six sons and four daughters. One of the
daughters died in infancy. All of the sons settled in Pickens County and two
daughters moved to Greenville County. Family members recalled that the children
attended a private school that was located near Mt. Carmel Church.

In an interview with Mrs. Faye Lathem Link, she shared that the Lathem family
utilized a lot of up-to-date equipment as new mechanical items became available.
"Running water for their home was furnished by a ram, or pumping station. Two
springs were used to make this work. One spring actually serviced the ram, and
the other spring furnished the water that was piped to the house. Both springs
were located across the road (present Hester Store Road) and the water pipes ran
up the hill and through the woods just west of the house," recalled Mrs. Link.
She continued, "The Lathem family purchased one of the first tractors in
Dacusville, a Fordson. Uncle Jim Lathem had the first motorcycle in the
community. It think it was a Harley-Davidson."

Perhaps the most interesting innovation for the turn of the century at the
Lathem household was a central lighting system. It was powered by acetylene and
lit up the countryside...
