Mr. Sheriff there was a McDow house on Old Shirley Road near the cemetery. He tells how Herman Werner, who lived on Werner Street in Central, would walk down Five Mile Creek, clean the cemetery and then walk back home. We have gone through the woods several times and checked it out. Not sure I could find it now going through the woods. I could give directions to someone going down the power lines and get close to it. This time of the year I wouldn't want to go with them to check it out. Chiggars and snakes! There is a tower on the property. The property is also leased out for hunter especially during deer season. The Pickens County Assessor's site for Jane R. Ready and Edgar L. Ready, 21 N. Palmetto St., Liberty, SC has an outline of the property. This is on the tax record for the property. http://www.co.pickens.sc.us/onlinetaxes/default.aspx#/Record/047657BD927BC102326 F4C43624C474C Volume 2 of Pickens County Cemetery Survey, p. 166 indicates there are four graves at the site. Local lore says that some of the graves were removed and taken to Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central. Not sure if this is true or just local lore. Jim (my husband) and I are probably the ones who "read" this cemetery for the Cemetery Survey. Anne Sheriff ---------- 8-27-2018 lived in Pickens County. Margaret was a Granddaughter of Rev. War Soldier John Nean Craig buried in the Craig Memorial Cemetery in Old Pickens. My GgGrandmother Martha McDow was one of Sidney and Margaret's Daughters who married Joseph Newberry Brock from Central. Joe and Martha moved to Texas after the War. Martha's brother John McDow turned to bootlegging after the war, then shot and killed a revenuer. John changed his name to John Dean then overnight took his family and lit out for Texas. I found and visited the Graves about 10 years ago and can probably find them again if they are still there. I'd like to take my cousin who lives in NC there in a couple of weeks. I plan to attend a Alexander Reunion being held in Charlotte at the old home of Hezekiah Alexander who was a second cousin once removed of my direct ancestor Lt. William Alexander. Hezekiah one of the signers the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Ray Alexander, anniealex@earthlink.net ---------- 10-1-2018 Just a note to thank you again for your help and suggestions on the McDow- Werner Cemetery earlier last month. Hopefully your Ark has landed on dry land by now. I did manage to get there the week before Florence hit. My cousin who lives on the outer banks to the north came down and we went together. The powerline right of way had been cleared sometime back but was pretty grown up in briars and brambles. After fighting our way there, we found the access road to the microwave tower and used it when we left. The graves are located just North of the tower. We found only three Gravestones and several other footstones with no inscription. The gravestones were for Sidney and Margaret Jane (Craig) McDow and a Warner infant daughter of CJ and MC Werner died Oct 1886. I don't know why Find-A-Grave had erased all the previously posted pictures of this Graveyard but I reposted pictures of the McDow gravestones. We then went on over to the Craig and the adjacent Old Pickens Presbyterian Church Cemeteries near Seneca and the Oconee Nuclear Power Station where Margaret McDow's ancestors are buried. Several of Margaret's family being Rev. War Vets. Fortunately we didn't encounter any snakes, chiggers or any other nefarious critters and had an entirely enjoyable visit to your fair state. I hope to visit again. Cheers, Ray Alexander, anniealex@earthlink.net
