W. Lesley asked that the deacons of Griffin go to the Glassy Mountain schoolhouse on Saturday evening before the first Sunday in October to help organize a church. The church authorized her deacons and pastor to go and investigate the matter, and if they found the proper course had been pursued to help organize the said church. October 8, 1916, letters of Transfer were granted to the following named brethren and sisters: G. W. Lesley, J. H. Lesley, W. D. Lesley, J. E. Lesley, Frank Pace,. Eunice Atkins, Etta Lesley, Nancy Lesley, Corrie Pace, Letha Pace, Eunna Pace, Kate Pace, L. A. Jones and Clifford Martin Garrett. Rev. Fulton Childress, Moderator S. H. Brown, Church Clerk This meeting was held on October 3, 1916, with Rev. J. G. Stamey of the Pickens Church, Rev. W. G. Nelson of the Secona Baptist Church and deacons from Griffin and Pickens attending. At this meeting, the newly organized church was given the name "Blue Ridge View Baptist", and Rev. Stamey was thereby elected to be the first pastor. The first deacons appointed were Sparks Childs, John Lesley and Early Atkins. Services were thereafter held in the old Glassy Mountain schoolhouse until 1938 when a new building was erected, which was our old fellowship building. Home coming services were conducted there on May 2, 1938. This building was a one-room construction of wood that seated around two hundred people. The church borrowed seats from the old tabernacle in Pickens, and, at a later date, the Riverside Baptist Church in Greenville gave benches to the church. The building was heated by an old wood heater until the gas heaters were placed in the church and kerosene lamps were used until after World War II. The first musical instrument was a piano purchased from a lady in Pickens for $25. Upon establishing the church, Sunday School was the first order of business to be discussed. It was decided that it would be held on every Sunday afternoon. On October 23, 1924, Blue Ridge View requested membership into the Pickens Baptist Association (now the Pickens-Twelve Mile Baptist Association), and after an investigation of the application, was welcomed into the association. The first delegates reported to attend the annual associational meeting after being inducted were Clifton Atkins, V. L. dark and Ivy Porter. Delegates in 1936 were V. L. Clark, John Lesley, Bryan Clark, Ivy Porter, Mary Clark, Eunice Clark, Mrs. John Lesley, Mrs. J. H. Childs and Ressie Lesley. Rev. Stamey pastored the community until 1925 when Rev. A. M. Simmons became the new pastor. He was a very dedicated man of God. He conducted services in the morning at Blue Ridge and then also in the afternoon at Mt. Tabor, and the only way he had to get there was by walking. He was paid $1.35 a month for preaching the first Saturday evening and the first Sunday morning. Rev. Simmons' annual salary was $22.22. All repairs to the church reported during 1940 were $1.25. Rev. Simmons served as pastor until 1942. On the first Saturday evening in 1942, following a revival led by Rev. Jesse McNeese and Rev. Colman Brown, Rev. Brown was elected as the new pastor. This was the first church he had ever pastored, and he became the first salaried pastor for $16 a month. In 1943, the first Cooperative Program contribution was made in the amount of $22.70. Training Union was first held under Rev. Brown in 1945 with J. C. Howard as first Training Union director. The first Vacation Bible School held at Blue Ridge View was directed by Miss Lillie Roper and her brother, who later became missionaries in Lebanon. In 1948, Miss Roper gave the church the money to have the inside of the church painted for the first time. Rev. Milo Hayes took over the leadership of Blue Ridge View in 1946. He led the congregation into building the two Sunday School rooms at the front of the auditorium in 1950, and then in 1954 to adding the other Sunday School rooms at the rear of the church building. Rev. Nick Grant became the new pastor in 1957. The parsonage Page 3 was built during his years of service, 1957 - 1962. Rev. Curtis Gilstrap, who served for four years from 1962 - 1966, shall always be remembered for his dedication to the young people of the community. A pictorial directory of the church members was made during the years that Rev. Frank Looper was pastor, 1966 - 1969. It was also during this time that the thoughts of a new church building began. A group of church members assembled together and decided to take $1,000 out of the church treasury and set up a building fund. The first Sunday's offering in each month would thereafter be added until a substantial amount accumulated to start on the new church. The land for the new church was purchased by the following members donations which totaled $1,142.00. Rev. and Mrs. Frank Looper Frank Looper, Jr. Keith Looper Wanda Looper Gary Looper Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Riqgins June Riggins Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Pace Jerry Pace Linda Pace Debbie Pace Bryan Clark Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Day Judy Day Pearl Simmons Mr. and Mrs. Alien Chappell Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clark Dexter Atkins Luther Atkins MilLon Clark, Jr. Jim Howard Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Powell Mr. and Mrs. Claude Raines Tommy Raines Page 4 Maggie Sloan Chris Howard Pat Howard Debra Anthony Peggy Anthony Mrs. Nellie O'Shields Mildred Jones Robert Lesley Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Lesley Mrs. Jack Atkins Ola Mae Wooten Rev. Paul McJunkin joined the community in 1970 along with his wife. Lizzie Mae, and their children, Dianne, Tony and Sherry. As the peoples' hopes and dreams of n now church grew, so did the building fund, and on November 23, 1975, those dreams became a reality when groundbreaking ceremonies were conducted by Rev. Bomar Raines. The foundation for the new church was laid on February 21, 1976, and work continued steadily until the first of November when the weather took a toll on the amount of work that could be done. Until this time, it had been calculated that a total of 8,272 man hours were put into this building. Such dedication and devotion by the ones who gave those man hours can never be forgotten The total cost of the building from February 1976 through May 1977 was $79,364.78. One of the most rewarding experiences of building this church has been the bonding together of the members as a unit. This was exemplified by the members working together in love for a common cause through the actual work and the fund-raising activities. Special recognition in this work should go to T. C. O'Bryant, a dedicated member appointed to lead in the building of the church, who worked so faithfully and patiently with the ones who put forth the effort to help, and to Oscar Atkins, for the most man hours in the new building with a little over 1,100 man hours. Rev. McJunkin's untiring support and encouragement of his congregation during the building of the new church instilled a pride in our hearts that time cannot erase. He provided a shining example in the construction of the new church, for no one worked harder or was more devoted to getting the job done. Easter Sunday, April 10, 1977, will always be a cherished date to the people of this church as this was the first time we were able to worship God in our new church - this was the day our dream came true. Rev. Bill Anthony followed Rev. McJunkin as our new pastor. He and his wife, Willice, have always served most faithfully. Their eagerness to be involved in all aspects of the church has provided a great example for all of us. On March 13, 1983, Rev. Barry Dilworth was elected pastor after having served as interim pastor for three months. Barry, along with his wife, Joan, and their children, Ashley and Jonathan, soon became dearly loved by all of us here at Blue Ridge View. Rev. Dilworth worked diligently with all groups in the church, but his "Pastor Pals" soon became a favorite of everyone. Also, Page 6 during his years of service there were two mission trips to Beckley, West Virginia - the first such trips ever conducted at our church. At this time, it is felt that recognition should go to J. C. Howard, who was the first church clerk from this community, as the others had been from Griffin. He was also the first and only treasurer for the church until the early 1980's. He served in this capacity as clerk/treasurer for forty-one years. Also, he has served as a deacon for over forty-eight years. Words could never express our appreciation for his faithfulness. Once again the church members at Blue Ridge View began to work together for a worthwhile goal - a new fellowship building. Everyone joined in to raise money for the fund by having hot dog suppers, auctions, yard sales, rock and walk-a- thons, selling candy, mugs, calendars, etc. The actual construction began on October 4, 1987 by Ronnie Riggins, who was contracted for the job. Ronnie did a marvelous job, and we are all grateful to him for his dedication to this task. Rev. Bill Anthony and his wife, Willice, once again joined our church family in June 1988, to serve as our interim pastor. We were all so glad to have them back in our midst again. Their dedication to the Lord's work shall never fade in our memory. August 7, 1988, was doubly special to all of us here at Blue Ridge View. It was our annual Homecoming with our special speaker being our former pastor. Rev. Curtis Gilstrap, and also the dedication of our new fellowship buildinq. We had a wonderful service with many staying for dinner in our new fellowship building - the first of many to come. On October 2, 1988, we welcomed Rev. Clarence Howard as our new pastor. He and his wife, Mary Jo, are originally from South Carolina, but had been pastoring at Nash's Chapel Baptist Church in Wise, Virginia. They have brought with them such an overwhelming enthusiasm and dedication for serving God. Rev. Howard's weekly children sermons are a treat for all of us - young and old alike. They have been with us only a short time, but we have grown to love them both more than they can ever know. In March of 1989, our church members with their families had their pictures taken for a pictorial directory. This was only the second time that this had been done at our church, the first being back in 1966. The completed directories arrived in August of the same year with the activity brochure following in February of 1990. August 13, 1989, was our annual Homecoming, and we were so proud to welcome back Rev. Barry Dilworth of Calvary Hill Baptist Church as our speaker for our services. The gospel group "Daybreak" provided special music. A dinner followed in the fellowship hall with well over one hundred people in attendance. Our R.A. and ladies softball teams received special recognition in August 1989. Both were voted "Most Christ-Like Team" by the other teams in the Pickens-Twelve Mile Association. This indeed was a special honor. During 1989, suggestions were taken for a nickname for the senior adults of our church. The overwhelming choice was "The Blue Ridge View Inspirations", which is a fitting tribute as this group of men and women have truly been inspirational to us all throughout the years. The Baptist Young Women's" group sponsored a hot dog supper on October 7, 1989, in order to raise money to purchase carpet for the church porch and steps. It was a huge success leaving only the choice of color to be decided upon before installation. On November 7, 1989, our church people begin receiving the Baptist Courier through the mail. The note on the new fellowship building was paid off in February of 1990. A service for the burning of this note was held on March 11, 1990. Those who took part in this service were Rev. Clarence Howard, Ronnie Alexander, Jim Howard and Sammy Eirod Work began soon afterwards on the landscaping of the entire front of the church grounds with the planting of trees, shrubs and flower beds to beautify our church surroundings. Tradition has always been very important to us at Blue Ridge View. We have started a few new ones during the last few years. We began placing red and white poinsettias in the church during the Christmas season and lilies during Easter in memory or in honor of our loved ones to beautify the church on these special occasions. Then, beginning in 1990, we cast ballots for Senior Citizen, Mother and Father of the Year on their respective days during May and June. The honorees then receive an engraved plaque that is placed in the fellowship building for all to see. The parsonage received a "spruce-up" job in May 1990. The church purchased the materials and Rev. Howard and Mary Jo painted the parsonage themselves. Lovely flower beds and shrubs that have been added only enhance the new look. Beautiful silver offering plates were placed in our church in memory of Mr. Oscar Atkins by his family in June 1990. Mr. Oscar was, in a word, a true gentleman. In September of 1990, a "Baby Grand" piano was purchased for our church and has certainly proved to be a highlight in our musical services. A dedication service for the new piano was held on September 16, 1990, with congregational singing and piano solos. Rev. Howard conducted a Baby Dedication Service on December 16, 1990, for all children two years of age and under. Our choir has grown enormously over the past few years under the exceptional direction of Sammy Elrod and Mary Jo Howard. The choir members worked long and hard to raise money to purchase choir robes - another first for Blue Ridge View. One of the fund-raising activities was the sale of plates and bells commemorating the 75th anniversary of our church during 1991. The new choir robes were first worn by the choir in their Christmas Cantata on December 23, 1990. Padded pews have certainly added a large degree of comfort for our folks. This project was completed in January of 1991. Children's Day was observed on June 9, 1991, with Rev. Howard directing parents to dedicate their children to the service of our Lord. Our Vacation Bible School held in June of this year proved to be the largest and most successful in Blue Ridge View history. The average nightly attendance was 112 children. Our thanks to the director, David Hines, and all the many devoted workers. A special patriotic service was held on June 30, 1991, to honor our men and women that served our country in the recent Persian Gulf crisis. Those that were in our church family included Delia Reynolds, Richard O'Bryant, Ernie Mobley, and Samanda Jordan. Due to our rising attendance in our worship services, our parking lot has had to be expanded. August 31, 1991, was deemed "Fun Day" at Blue Ridge View with activities including a dunking booth, children's games and an old-timers softball game topped off by a hot dog supper and cake auction. The proceeds, totaling approximately $1,100, certainly helped in this latest church project which was completed in September. As you all know, this year, 1991, marks the 75th anniversary of our church. Our hearts are filled with pride and a sense of humbleness as we reflect back over the years, but the history of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church doesn't end here. We must go on from here with the same faith and love of those who have brought us where we are here today. We must place this faith in the same steadfast and unmoving foundation that our church was built upon - our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. o----------o Blue Ridge View Baptist Church 745 Wolf Creek Road Pickens, South Carolina 29671 Mr. G.W. Lesley asked that the deacons of Griffin Baptist Church attend a meeting at Glassy Mountain schoolhouse to help organize a new church. According to the minutes from the Griffin church, this meeting was held during the first week of October of 1916. on October 8, 1916, the church records show that the following people were granted their church letters, thus becoming the charter members of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church: G.W. Lesley J.H. Lesley W.D. Lesley J.E. Lesley Frank Pace Eunnice Atkins Etta Lesley Nancy Lesley Carrie Pace Letha Pace Eunna Pace Kate Pace L.A. Jones Clifford Martin Garret Church services were held at the Glassy Mountain schoolhouse until 1938. The new building was erected and later served as a fellowship hall. Homecoming services were held there on May 2, 1930. This building was a one-room construction that seated about 200 people. Seats were borrowed from the old Tabernacle in Pickens, and sometime later pews were donated by Riverside Baptist Church. Lighting was provided by kerosene lamps until after World War II. When Rev. A.M. Simmons became the new pastor in 1925, he not only served Blue Ridge View, but also the Mt. Tabor Church. In order to get to Mt. Tabor to preach he had to walk the entire distance to the church. He was paid $1.35 a month, twice a month. Pastors: J.G. Stamey A.M. Simmons Coleman Brown Milo Hayes Nick Grant Curtis Gilstrap Frank Looper Paul McJunkin Barry Dilworth Clarence Howard This list does not indicate the order in which the pastorates occurred, nor does it distinguish between interim and full-time pastors.
