Flynn-KE8FD *********************************************************************** 05-01-15 CEMETERY LOCATION: ------------------ > GPS = Latitude N x Longitude W CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ I just took a look at the other photos. That is definitely not the family cemetery at John Chastain's. This appears to be across the road from "Lige" (Elijah) Chastain's place. The house is now vacant because Wilma Stewart (the last occupant) died several months ago. She was John Chastain and "Miss" Pearl Chastain's daughter. Was this right before you get to Duck Pond Lane with a large pond on the left side of the road, coming from Holly Springs? If that is the case, I was not aware of this cemetery. I'll see what I can do to get it cleaned up and better marked so that someone doesn't come along with a bush hog and drive through it. From: Dennis Chastain dchas878@aol.com o----------o If I understand where this is located, you need to contact Victor T. Chastain who lives on this same road. He could probably answer your questions. From: Judy Ballard digroots@lowcountry.com o----------o If you are talking about the small grave directly on the road side, I already asked Victor Chastain. He said it was a child from a pioneer family. The child died, and they buried her and went on. He thought there might be two graves. Never stopped to see if there was an inscription. Tell him it's the one across from Wilma Stewart's house. From: Karen Patterson pattypainter@charter.net o----------o The Memoral Sara An AL Wos bo Oct 14 1843 an Dc Th L Dc 6 1843 Maybe Sara & Al were born 14-Oct-1843 and died 6-Dec-1843? From: Terry Jackson jacksont@otelco.net o----------o From: Virginia Alexander cvalex@cpws.net Could they have been trying to spell Alexander and run out of space ? o----------o From: Teresa Burke meerrotts@msn.com Ok here's my take on the tombstone. It still looks like one first and last name to me. The person who inscribed it didn't leave a space between Sara / An,(they left a space between the other words) so it looks like the first name SaraAn (SaraAnn). If the last name is AL the only pronounciation that I can associate with it is the word ALL, so maybe they were trying to spell Hall. o----------o From: Karen Patterson pattypainter@charter.net That makes sense to me, Victor said there were two children buried there. I was trying to make a last name after Sara, but it appears to be the second child. Good job. o----------o From: Joy King joyk@sc.rr.com ALL/AULL is a legitimate surname! o----------o From: Barbara Nelson distler5@charter.net I looked and this is what I saw: THE MEMOIAL SARA AIYAL (?AIRIAL?) _xj 05 BO OCT 4 1843 AND ? TH* L*D(THE LORD?) O (OCTOBER) 6 1843 o----------o From: Teresa Burke meerrotts@msn.com There are several All's in Barnwell County and Aull's in Newberry. I think this grave is in Pickens County. I have no idea where. I just thought that if the tombstone transcriber were trying to spell the name the way it sounded then Hall (All) would be a good candidate. There are lots of Halls in Pickens County 1840-1850. o----------o Paul Kankula Speculation: The Memorial Sara - and - Al (SaraAn Al?) was - born on - October 14 1843 - and - died on - the - l? - December 6 1843 TOMBSTONE TRANSCRIPTION NOTES: ------------------------------ a. = age at death b. = date-of-birth d. = date-of-death h. = husband m. = married p. = parents w. = wife
